Mel's Botanical Retreat

Experience the real Jamaica with a unique Jungle retreat

What this place means to me, by Kiara

High up in the scenic expanse of Kentucky Mountain in Westmoreland Parish, 2,500 feet above sea level, lies a hidden paradise – Mel’s Botanical Retreat. But this enchanting getaway isn’t just about breathtaking views and lush gardens. It is a living testament to love, loss, and an unbreakable connection to nature. At the heart of this sanctuary is a story of resilience and passion.

Running Mel’s Botanical Retreat is more than a job; it’s a purpose. When my mother, Mel, founded the retreat, she dreamed of creating a space where guests could rejuvenate and experience the magic of the Jamaican mountains. Tragically, in 2021, Mel passed away from Covid-19, along with her unborn son. At just 14 years old, I faced a life-altering moment of loss. Yet, instead of stepping back, iI stepped forward, determined to honour their mother’s vision.

From a young age, the mountains were a second home. By the time i could walk, I was already helping my mother host guests, and by age two, the joy of connecting with people from around the world became a part of who I  was. Working side by side with Mel instilled in me a deep love for hospitality and a respect for nature’s healing power. Taking over the retreat was not just a duty – it was fulfilling a dream shared with my mom.

Since then, I have managed the retreat with an extraordinary touch, bringing my own vision to life while keeping Mel’s legacy intact. This dedication and exceptional work caught the attention of the New York Times Magazine in 2023, a proud moment that highlighted the beauty of what I’ve accomplished in just a few short years.

Today, Mel’s Botanical Retreat stands as a beacon of warmth, welcoming guests to experience the peace of the mountains and the genuine hospitality that sets it apart. It’s a place where every sunrise feels like a gift, and each guest leaves with a piece of the mountain’s soul. I continues to share this sanctuary with the world, hosting travellers and sharing stories, all while preserving the heart of what Mel created.

What makes this journey remarkable is the strength it takes to transform grief into growth. Every moment spent nurturing the retreat is a way to celebrate a mother’s love and the spirit that remains among the flowers and trees. Through my work, I ensure that Mel’s vision lives on, blossoming in the heart of Kentucky Mountain.
